John McGahern: A Private World
This 52 minute documentary was filmed in 2004, just two years before John McGahern, the highly influential Irish author, passed away. His autobiography 'Memoirs' was released shortly after filming and it is these memoirs that shape the documentary.
The film features interviews with the Roscommon man, who also reads extracts from his own writings aloud. It shows McGahern in humble, rural surroundings, as he was in the early stages of his life and it gives a great insight into the life of a man who already put so much of himself into his works.
It is fitting that the film documenting an award winning author would in turn be heralded by critics and it received recognition as Best Documentary at the Irish Film and Television Awards, Best Arts Documentary at the Celtic Film Festival and was a Gold Medallion Winner at Cinegael Buffalo.
